Nutritional Center
The North end of our reception area contains our over the counter and Hills prescription diet display but our nutrition services do not end there. In addition to carrying the displayed foods we also have larger packages of the over the counter diets available either in stock or by special order. We carry most Hills prescription diets and many of the Purina and IVD prescription diets. Those that we do not stock regularly are available by special order. Felicia would be happy to arrange your order at the desk or by phone.
Here are some tips regarding common diet concerns.
WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAMS
Dogs and cats are not the same at all when it comes to weight loss plans or expectations. Dogs should eat a combination of meat and vegetable and grain products. They are omnivores and will beg and steal and do destructive things if they are hungry. Cats are true carnivores and their bodies sense hunger based on protein. They require a higher levels of protein and fat even on a weight loss program than dogs or people. The Atkins diet should have been called the Catkins diet. Read on for more details.
DOGS-THE GREEN BEAN DIET
Dr Dennis calls the diet by this name because the first time she heard about it was from a friend whose Labrador lost a great deal of weight when she substituted a can of green beans for the dogs’ breakfast and taught it to get the can from the pantry as a trick.
Since then both cooked frozen or canned green beans, raw or cooked carrots, and even plain canned pumpkin have been added to the list of great vegetables that dogs will eat in place of some of their dog food. That does not mean they get goodies. It means you feed less of their high quality balanced light or maintenance diet and replace the reduced quantity with the beans, carrots and pumpkin. The dogs feel full and the owners use the veggies as treats and the dogs lose weight.
