We all love our pets. Sometimes, though, those pets are so pampered and loved, that extra weight may somehow become a part of our pets' lives. We all want our pets to be healthy, so, if your pet is at an unhealthy weight, something should be done about it.
Here's how you can help:
- First, make sure you check with one of our veterinarians as to if your pet is really over weight and why. They could be an over-eater, or they could have something wrong with their thyroid gland. Only a checkup can help us be sure.
- Your dog should be eating balanced dog foods, complete with everything they need, nutritionally. Meat should be the first ingredient listed on any dog food to be sure they are getting enough protein. Also, your dog may not have to eat everyday. Dogs can get away with not eating for a few days, and they can still be healthy. You know how your dog is with food, so just monitor what, and how much of it, they eat.
- Exercise may also be an issue. If your pet is overweight because of lack of exercise, and maybe too much food, make sure you start gradually working in an exercise routine. The excercising will be slow at first, but should pick up with time.
Overall, you need to monitor your pet to be sure they are healthy. They cannot do it alone. Support them in their weight loss goals, and keep them living a long life with you.
